Rethinking supply and demand in home renovation: BUILD UP interviews Erwin Mlecnik
In a recent BUILD UP interview, Erwin Mlecnik, Assistant Professor at Delft University of Technology and Coordinator of the LIFE CondoReno project, shared his reflections on the future of One-Stop Shops (OSS) for home renovation. Drawing on more than 30 years of experience in sustainable construction and innovation, Erwin highlighted how current OSS models often fail to address the fragmentation of supply chains and the complexity faced by homeowners when planning energy renovations.
“Providing the service to homeowner associations is a whole new game compared to servicing individual homeowners,” he noted, emphasising the need for trained social and technical process coaches to guide group decision-making.
As the recast Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) positions OSS at the heart of Europe’s renovation efforts, Erwin underlined the importance of integrated, human-centric approaches and stronger public–private collaboration frameworks.
The CondoReno project works precisely towards these goals—developing innovative, replicable models for OSS that support collective renovation in condominiums across Europe.
